QUICK SNAPS • AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHERS SHINE IN 2021 WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR

BEAUTY OF BLUR • Getting sharp images has become easier over the past decade due to the quality of cameras and lenses. But what if you don’t want sharp shots? Darran Leal looks at how slowing things down can create stunning results.

YOUR BEST SHOT • Here’s a theme that obviously challenged a few of you this month, as we saw a huge variety of imagery, but also many images that didn’t quite speak to the theme. Here were our favourites that captured the feel, weather, and moods of the changing seasons.

THE LIFE AQUATIC • The ocean is a fascinating and ever-changing subject for a photographer to focus their lens on. In this special feature, 2019 Photographer of the Year finalist Ian Hollis lifts the lid on how he captures waves at their most raw and visceral.

MASTER YOUR MOBILE • Mobile phones are capable of high-level image capture, and so much more – if only we learn to embrace them!

QUICK TIPS: MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY

ESSENTIAL MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY APPS • Here are some useful apps to help you plan, shoot, edit and share better images with your smartphone.

FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME • Many of us have dreamed of turning our love for sports into a career. But what does it take to be a professional sports photographer in an era when every fan has a camera and moments are gone in the blink of an eye? AP meets Getty sports photographer Rob Cianflone to find out.

TARGETED ADJUSTMENTS: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE • Targeted adjustments are the secret weapon that will transform your images. Here’s a crash course in getting started.

GRADUATED FILTER – COLOR RANGE MASK • Let’s dive right in with our first targeted adjustment using the Graduated Filter tool with a Color Range mask. The Graduated Filter works best when you have a defined line through your image, like a horizon.

GRADUATED FILTER – LUMINANCE RANGE MASK • Now that we’ve done a Color range mask using the Graduated Filter, let’s try a Luminance range mask.

RADIAL FILTER – COLOR RANGE MASK • Now, let’s look at using the Radial Filter. Compared to the Graduated Filter, the Radial Filter is best to use when your subject is smaller, or circular – animals in a landscape can be great for this tool.

RADIAL FILTER – LUMINOSITY RANGE MASK • My final lesson is using a Luminosity range mask with the Radial Filter. To use it, you’ll follow the steps 1 to 3 as with the Color mask above, but when it comes time to select the Range mask, you’ll choose Luminance.

WRAP UP: PRACTISE & HAVE FUN

SONY A7 IV • After a wait of more than three years, the successor to Sony’s venerable A7 III is finally here. Mike O’Connor takes a look.

RESULTS

MSI SUMMIT E16 FLIP EVO • At a time when digital photographic workflows seemed to have spilled out over to several devices, it can be overwhelming as a photographer to feel the need to juggle a camera, PC, tablet and phone as one shoots, processes, edits and posts their images from shutter click to Instagram...
